GUESTHOUSE ∞ ROOMS AND TOURS ∞ ARMENIA

EXPERIENCE ARMENIA

GOMK IS A SMALL VILLAGE THAT LAYS ON THE TOP OF A 2000 M HIGH MOUNTAIN IN THE VAYOTS DZOR PROVINCE OF ARMENIA

LONG STORY SHORT

One fine night, during our first holiday in Armenia (and after a few shots of the neighbours’ homemade honey vodka), we ended up buying a plot of land, including a house in a questionable state of repair and a number of amazing walnut trees. A handshake, and probably another shot, closed the deal.

After a year of ups and downs, language barriers, somewhat complex construction works and a wealth of incredible experiences with amazing people, we have opened our guesthouse in Gomk, the one with the bright green metal roof (it was supposed to be a somber dark green… language barriers, as we said), to welcome you in beautiful Armenia and share with you all this country we now call a second home has to offer.

REASONS WHY

Gomk is part of the fascinating Transcaucasian Trail, a wide-reaching paths' network that is taking hikers to some of the remotest corners of the Caucasus. The entire region is well preserved and mostly undiscovered by tourists. Hiking here will be unlike anything you’ve ever done. Our four trails are an unexplored hidden gem with breathtaking views of the mountains and the valleys.

THE TRANSCAUCASIAN TRAIL

The magnificent Armenian monasteries and churches, with their unique architecture, have a fascinating story to reveal. Armenia was the first country in the world to declare Christianity as its national religion. Many of the monasteries are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and have played a significant role in the history of the region as a center of economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity.

THE MONASTERIES

Lake

If you wish to take a break from the chaos of the modern world, immerse yourself in nature and reconnect with nature, Armenia is Europe’s best kept secret. With growing popularity among travellers, this country is a hidden gem, still untouched by mass tourism. Impressive landscapes, countless waterfalls, hot springs, caves and valleys. The spectacular mountains as far as your eyes can see will steal your heart.

THE NATURE

Archaeologists unearthed what might be the world’s oldest winery, the Areni-1 cave, just an hour away from our village. It is estimated to be 6,100 years old. We organise guided visits and wine tasting in Areni. Wine is the lifeblood of local culture, consecrated at Armenian Apostolic masses, sipped at elaborate traditional feasts, and chugged on raucous nights out.

THE OLDEST WINERY

A typical meal in an Armenian house takes pride of the homemade sides, like bread, butter, sour milk, cheese, fresh and pickled vegetables, and radishes. Locals produce their own honey, jam and rose water and their national fruit is the apricot. Most meals are accompanied by oghi, the traditional homemade fruit vodka. The pomegranate with its symbolic association with fertility represents the nation.

THE ARMENIAN CUISINE

Horse Legs

One of the best ways to admire Vayots Dzor’s incredible scenery is from the back of a horse. Armenians have been breeding and domesticating beautiful horses for millennia. Every second household in our village has a few and our neighbour runs a horse farm too. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned horseman, this is a most recommended experience. Let us know and we will organise it for you!
